Week 5 NFL Recap | Big Stats, Big Plays, Big Totals, Big Injuries in 2021
Sports
High Scoring is the topic of the week for Week 5 of the season. If you’re a gambler, you should have taken the over, since it was one of those weeks – along with a slew of injuries, sadly.
Los Angeles Rams (4-1) vs. Seattle Seahawks (2-3) on Thursday (26-17 LAR)
Matthew Stafford continues to fill the stat sheet with 365 passing yards, with 150 of those yards going to Robert Woods. The major news, though, is Russel Wilson’s finger.
Wilson injured his throwing hand’s middle finger in the third quarter and was replaced by Geno Smith for the rest of the game. The injury was later identified as a ruptured tendon, which was surgically repaired, and the Seahawks are hoping to lose the all-pro quarterback for just four weeks.
New England Patriots (2-3) at Houston Texans (1-4) on Sunday (25-22 NE)
For the second week in a row, the Davis Mills show came close to putting the Patriots away, but Nick Folk’s 21-yard field goal with 17 seconds left was enough to nullify the Herculean effort.
In the end, a commendable effort by Mac Jones and Belichick’s defense was not enough to overcome a 21/29 throwing performance for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Jones, if he maintains his efficient play, may be a strong contender for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown.
Sunday: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1) vs. Miami Dolphins (1-4). (45-17 TB)
Tom was obviously dissatisfied with his performance last week, and the Dolphins were forced to wear one as a result.
TB tossed five touchdown passes and 411 passing yards, and he was kind enough to allow Blaine Gabbert come in and finish the job when the game was far out of reach. Antonio Brown and Mike Evans both scored on this brutal ass-whooping after Leonard Fournette dropped one in the endzone for fun.
Jacoby Brissett didn’t have a particularly terrible game, but he was sacked three times by the Buccaneers’ defense. Someone contact PETA because Tom Brady is out fishing for Dolphins on Sunday, as he has done for the last 20 years.
Sunday’s matchup pits the Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) against the Carolina Panthers (3-2). (21-18 PHI)
The Eagles’ late-game comeback was aided by Jalen Hurts’ legs and Darius Slay’s mitts.
It wasn’t a beautiful game from either pivot, but you’ve have to pick Hurts over Darnold when you need the additional points from the quarterback. Each player threw at least one interception, with Darnold throwing three. The result could have been different if the Panthers had recovered Hurts’ endzone fumble in the second quarter.
Tennessee Titans (3-2) at Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5) on Sunday (37-19 TEN)
Perhaps Urban Meyer could contact his “friend” from the bar to see if she’d be willing to play defense. Derrick Henry dominated the North Florida clowns, running for 130 yards and three scores.
Trevor Lawrence scored a touchdown on the ground and via the air, but James Robinson’s efforts (149 running yards, 1 touchdown) were overshadowed by the head coach’s theatrics and the performance of, possibly, the first non-quarterback MVP since Adrian Peterson in 2012.
Denver Broncos (3-2) at Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3) on Sunday (27-19 PIT)
He isn’t yet dead. The Steelers looked alive for the first time in weeks as Big Ben threw for two touchdowns and Najee Harris rushed for 122 yards.
Teddy Bridgewater also had a terrific game (288 yards, two touchdowns, one interception), but he had to learn a lesson in old-man strength.
JuJu Smith-season-ending Schuster’s shoulder injury, which was revealed Monday, may put a damper on the Steelers’ huge win.
Detroit Lions (0-5) at. Minnesota Vikings (2-3) on Sunday (19-17 MIN)
Greg Joseph got to play hero after letting the club down against the Cardinals in Week 2 with a career-best 54-yard field goal as time expired to sneak past a feisty Lions team that had gone ahead following a huge running score with 32 seconds left and scoring on a 2-point conversion.
To be sure, it was a game of kickers, as Kirk Cousins connected with Alex Mattison for the only other significant, apart from the Lions’ running score late in the fourth quarter.
Unlike the other 0-and team, Dan Campbell’s Lions are still winless, but they are giving opponents a fight for their money.
Green Bay Packers (4-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) on Sunday (25-22 OT GB)
From a game about precise kicking to a game about “who’s kicker can really convert,” the game has changed. Mason Crosby walked off the Bengals with a 49-yard touchdown pass deep in overtime.
Ellen had a fantastic day for the Packers, throwing for 344 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick, which benefited Davante Adams, who had 206 receiving yards and one touchdown, including a 59-yard bomb. Aaron Jones rushed for 103 yards on 14 attempts, breaking the 100-yard mark.
Joe Burrow was also impressive, completing 26 of 38 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. However, the sophomore’s performance was marred by three sacks and a lack of a running game.
New Orleans Saints (3-2) take on Washington Football Team (2-3) on Sunday (33-22 NO)
The game was ugly as bowling shoes, but it was highlighted by Jameis Winston’s amazing 72-yard touchdown pass to Deonte Harris in the first quarter. Winston threw three more strikes on the day, despite throwing a.500 ball. When he connected, it was highlight-reel material.
New York Jets (1-4) vs. Atlanta Falcons (2-3) on Sunday (27-20 ATL)
The Falcons grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat live from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Old Country, as Matt Ryan continues to attempt to play well enough to be moved out of Atlanta through England. With 342 passing yards and two touchdowns, he resembled his MVP form from 2016, but he lacks the tools to compete in an extremely difficult NFC South division on his own. Zack Wilson, apparently, feels the same way. The Jets are a terrible team.
Sunday’s matchup pits the Chicago Bears (3-2) against the Las Vegas Raiders (3-2). (20-9 CHI)
Will the real Derek Carr please take the stage? The Raiders seem to be falling back down to earth after a strong start to the season. While a loss to the Chargers was tolerable, what about the Bears? Seriously? Even at home? Even Justin Fields had a bad game (12/20, 111 yards, 1 TD), and Carr barely cracked 200 yards throwing. Let’s play a game of “spot the imposter,” which starts and finishes just off “The Strip.”
With the departure of head coach John Gruden announced late Monday, it will be an intriguing week for the Raiders.
“I’ve resigned as the head coach of the Raiders in Las Vegas. I support the Raiders and don’t want to be a nuisance. Thank you to everyone of Raider Nation’s players, coaches, staff, and fans. I’m sorry if I offended anybody; it was never my intention.”
Jon Gruden is a former NFL quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns (3-2) take on the Los Angeles Chargers (4-1) on Sunday (47-42 LAC)
“The Shoot-Out at SoFi Stadium” was decided by a last-second Austin Ekeler punch in from 3 yards out to end the back-and-forth.
First and foremost, the Browns worked hard. Baker Mayfield did all he could to win this game, throwing for 305 yards and two touchdowns, with Nick Chubb running for 161 yards and a touchdown of his own and Kareem Hunt kicking in a pair, but it wasn’t enough.
Justin Herbert cannot be stopped, will not be stopped, and should not be stopped. This is a run for the ages right now, with 398 passing yards and four touchdown passes to go along with Ekeler’s three total touchdowns (2 on the ground, one through the air). Herbert added another running touchdown, and the two guys were virtually the whole offense, accounting for all but 17 of the 493 total yards. This is an outstanding game.
Sunday’s matchup pits the San Francisco 49ers (2-3) against the Arizona Cardinals (5-0). (17-10 ARI)
Even if it wasn’t the most glamorous victory, the Cardinals remain the league’s only unbeaten club.
Trey Lance made his first career start for the Niners and, like many other highly regarded rookie quarterbacks this season, struggled. It’s okay to have a sub.500 passing percentage with no touchdowns and an interception. Jimmy will be out for a bit longer, but there is a lot to look forward to. He may lose some time due to a knee injury, according to reports from Monday.
Kyler Murray got off to a slow start to the season, tossing just 239 yards in the air with a touchdown and a single running yard.
On this particular day, the Cards were beatable, but the 49ers were not up to the task.
New York Giants (1-4) vs. Dallas Cowboys (4-1) on Sunday (44-20 DAL)
Because this game was settled in the second quarter, the score may be deceptive. In the first quarter, Giants running back Saquon Barkley suffered an ankle injury, while quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a concussion before the half ended. Mike Glennon was brought in to replace Jones and performed an excellent job, but it’s terrible news for a team already beset by injuries. They’ll be without their two top players for at least a bit longer now.
Dak Prescott put on a performance for the Arlington fans on the one-year anniversary of his own ankle injury. Throwing for 302 yards and three touchdowns on 22/32 passing. Ezekiel Elliot had 21 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Tony Pollard, his backfield mate, scorched the Giants defense for 75 yards running as well. At this point, it’s the Cowboys’ division to lose.
According to the injury report, wide receiver Kenny Golladay, Barkley, and Jones may all miss Week 6.
Buffalo Bills (4-1) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (2-3) on Sunday Night Football (38-20 BUF)
Patrick Mahomes must stop turning the ball over if the Chiefs are to reach the playoffs.
Mahomes completed 33 of 54 passes for 272 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, one of which was recovered for a touchdown by Micha Hyde in the third quarter. As if that wasn’t enough, Mahomes fumbled the ball away to the always-ready-to-assist Buffalo defense. Another setback for the Chiefs, as starting running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is expected to miss a few weeks due to a damaged MCL.
Josh Allen didn’t have to throw many passes to make an impression. Completing 15 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns was more than enough to put the brakes on those Kansas City youngsters. The Chargers’ division to lose is the AFC West.
Indianapolis Colts (1-4) at Baltimore Ravens (4-1) on Monday (31-25 OT BAL)
The Ravens made an incredible comeback after trailing 22-3 at one point.

Carson Wentz had his finest game as a Colt, throwing for 402 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Taylor’s goal in the first minute of the game was a beauty, a check-down ball that he fought his tail off for. Michael Pittman’s 42-yard reception was also not to be sniffed at. Indianapolis should have won it with a stunning 98-yard hook-and-ladder fumble recovery, but it was called back due to a “illegal forward pass” penalty. Perhaps this contributed to the blocked field goal later in the quarter, which squandered the Colts’ momentum. This is where Lamar Jackson comes in.

Jackson connected with “Hollywood” Marquise Brown on a 43-yard bomb for the Ravens’ first touchdown of the night, topping the 42-yarder Wentz fired to start the third quarter. Still down by a touchdown, Lamar connected with tight end Mark Andrews twice to force overtime. In overtime, the 2019 NFL MVP connected with “Hollywood” one more time to finish off the incredible comeback. Jackson ended with a mind-blowing stat line: 37/43 passing, 442 yards and four touchdowns in the air (his first of his career), and 62 running yards. Mark Andrews caught 11 passes for 147 yards, two touchdowns, and two two-point conversions. Brown had 9 receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns. This is an incredible game.
That’s all there is to it for another week. There have been a few blowouts, as well as a few injuries. Let’s hope for a few more entertaining games next week, like the Colts/Ravens matchup, and less major injuries!
