“The Last Mercenary” is a movie about the desperate struggle of a group of mercenaries to survive in an apocalyptic world. It’s an action-packed, entertaining film that features some great special effects and a compelling story.

The Last Mercenary is a movie that tells the story of a former soldier who takes on a job as a mercenary to save his family from the hands of terrorists. The film has been described as an action-packed, thrilling ride. Read more in detail here: the last mercenary review.

The French are renowned for their love of espionage films like “OSS 117” and “Spy Game.” The newest film from their espionage vault is ‘The Last Mercenary,’ which has a lot of humor. David Charhon directed the film, which was based on a script he co-wrote with Ismael Sy Savane and debuted on Netflix on July 30. Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, and Samir Decazza play supporting parts in this action comedy starring the renowned action actor Jean-Claude Van Damme.

‘The Last Mercenary’ is a fast-paced action comedy with equal parts humor and action. The story is told from three distinct viewpoints, each of which is going in a different direction toward the other. There’s a mercenary who expertly eludes those attempting to track him as he tries to reconnect with a son he abandoned, then a government agency questioning suspects and determined to keep a government operation from the past known as Cup-And-Ball hidden, and a Scarface-obsessed son of a mob boss who messes up a drug drop.

The film recounts the fascinating tale of Richard Brumere, a mysterious former secret agent turned mercenary, or if you enjoy Van Damme’s performance in “The Mist.” Because of his proclivity for appearing and disappearing into thin air, he was given this moniker. Brumere vanished off the face of the planet when the government abandoned him after a mission went south in the African nation of Chad in the 1990s. He struck a deal with the authorities to give his son Archibald life immunity and a monthly stipend before he went underground. The legend is forced to resurface in France when his estranged son is unjustly accused of weapons and drug trafficking by the government as a result of an overzealous bureaucrat’s mistake and a mafia operation.

With his son’s safety at stake, his desire to identify himself, and a desire to clear his child’s name, ‘The Mist’ has returned to action. Archie regains his identity, and the crooks behind the identity theft issue and shady illegal activities are brought to justice by the renowned hero and his henchmen, after a succession of intriguing events, tough kickboxing situations, and sputters of humor.

When the film begins, the scenario is stunning: a one-man rescue operation with Van Damme doing his famous split between two walls, his stealth entrance, mastery of his butt-kicking abilities, and his charm as he effortlessly defeats his opponents in a single swoop pulls the viewer into the film. This is very nostalgic, particularly for lovers of the Brussels Muscles. Another memorable moment is the bar scene, in which Jean Claude is tearing it up on the dance floor before reuniting with an old colleague from his glory days, Marguritte, played by French beauty Miou Miou. He performs several movements from his film ‘Kickboxer,’ a dance he created; it may not be the greatest, but it is certainly distinctive and memorable, and he seems to enjoy himself everytime he does it.

The music is well utilized, going higher and quicker during action sequences to increase adrenaline levels and becoming calm when strong emotions are involved. The film also deals with the subject of sacrifice. Having to choose between one’s family and one’s nation. There’s also the genuine dread of becoming a terrible parent to one’s children. Richard Brumere preferred to outsource the job of father to a friend and observe his family from afar, believing that he would not provide a good example for his kid.

The plot is acceptable. Despite the lack of wow elements, uneven plots, and some off-color jokes that don’t land as effectively as they could, it still succeeds because of the charisma and charm of the protagonist. However, one element that should astonish viewers is Jean Claude’s ability to sound like other people without using any software, which isn’t very remarkable. It’s strange to hear JCVD not sound like himself, since his voice and accent are characters in and of themselves, adding a unique flavor to every part he portrays.

When he breaks his son Archie out of police custody, it’s a memorable moment that’s typical Van Damme. The kid doesn’t know how to drive, and they’re being pursued by a gang of delinquents who want to murder them both. As a result, Brumere grabs the wheel from the passenger side as Archie fiddles with the brake and gas pedals. Despite the gunfire and his son’s cries as they flee, Van Damme maintains his usual calm, easy-going demeanor. There is no pressure, no fear, just steady measured movements.

If you’re a big fan of Van Damme, you’ll note that this film features a lot more jump cuts per sequence than his previous films, particularly in the action sequences. Though he still looks fantastic and moves well, the actor is 60 years old, so it’s understandable that there would be more editing and perhaps the employment of a stunt crew than when he was younger.

Overall, ‘The Last Mercenary’ is a humorous love letter to Jean Claude Van Damme and his history, and the action star plays both an intimidating mercenary and a doting parent in the film. It’s essentially Van Damme doing everything fans love about him while also embracing odd aspects of action comedy like altering clothes from pool boy Jean-Claude to Pornstache Jean-Claude to blonde wig Jean-Claude, among other things that are a joy to see.

Netflix has made ‘The Last Mercenary’ accessible for viewing.

SCORE: 6 OUT OF 10
